Bananas Making my ears itch

Seriously, does anyone else understand this? I used to eat bananas as a kid all the time, everytime my mom would go to the store, she would get some new bananas. They never lasted long inour house, I would eat em up. But now, 20 years later, they are as good as they always were, but I cannot stand to eat them because every single time I do, they make my ears itch. I have never looked up this unusual disorder or whatever it may be. It is impossible to describe the inner ear itch and everyone thinks I am a lunatic. There is some psychological disorders in my family, but common, I'm not crazy. RIGHT? If anyone out there can relate. Pass it along.

  1. I googled "bananas make my ears itch" and your blogged popped up! Hahaha no you're not crazy. They do the same thing to me. I loved them too when I was little, but as I got older I developed an allergy to bananas and watermelon. Not a fan of watermelon, but I recently tried to start eating bananas again and got the same 'ole result, itchy inner ears!!! So no, you're not crazy. :)

  2. HAH, they make my inner ears / the roof of my mouth itch something crazy. It's actually "fleshy" fruits in general (not sure how else to describe it)... bananas, cantaloupe, other melons, etc.

  5. Haha I, too, have grown up with people thinking that's a crazy symptom. After 2 bananas my throat would start to swell. Now people think I'm crazy because I say I ate so many bananas that my allergy went away.

  6. Haha! You're obviously not crazy since I just googled "bananas making my ear itch" and your blog was one of the results, just like the other comment said. I had no idea I was allergic!

  7. WOW! I am so happy to hear that I am not the only individual being attacked by bananas, nectarines, and Sun chips. My ears and throat felt as if they were being eaten from the inside out! Sun chips and Doritos is even worse, for my throat swells and swallowing becomes almost impossible. Well, I guess I will discontinue all of these items from my future diet. Thank you all for sharing!

  8. This is so fricking funny I was talking to my daughter about eating foods and how they make your body react. Ice Cream makes me cough bad. I try to eat bananas when I can keep them in our house because of muscle spasms but they make my ears itch so bad and my daughter laughed at me like I was crazy. So I told her and my husband I was going to google it because I am not the only crazy one out there, lol!

  9. Anyone that posted in the comments have a reaction to Skittle or Starbursts? When I eat them my face sweats. I wanted to see if there is a connection to that and the banana itchy ears people.

  12. As soon as I put a banana in my mouth, my lips, tongue and ears start itching like crazy.. I also, have a seasonal allergy to ragweed and there's a connection with the pollen and bananas which causes this reaction. Benadryl to the rescue if the itching lasts too long.. I also used to be able to eat bananas all of the time until a few years ago, the itching drives me crazy now!!

  17. Found this today...
So when a pollen allergic person eats a fruit with a structurally similar protein, they may experience intense itching and burning of the lips, mouth and throat. Occasionally, there is mild swelling as well. This phenomenon is called Oral Allergy Syndrome.

  18. Reading about my partner's allergic reaction to foods caused me to recall my experience with bananas as a child. Deemed to be a nutritious food, my mum would encourage me to eat this fruit. Despite being a fussy eater, I was happy to do so, providing the fruit was not over ripe. Invariably, however, I would experience a sensation either during or just after eating, that I could only describe as an itchiness 'inside my ears.' I would tell my mum, but always her response was one of incredulity, and I think she thought this was just another example of my faddiness. I am fascinated to read now that this is a recognised allergic reaction. Whilst I don't eat a lot of bananas now, when I do, I can't say I experience this same sensation, so it does seem I have grown out of it. Incidentally, I did go on to develop hayfever, albeit not as extreme as some and pretty well managed with anti histamine tablets. So, I support comments that indicate a link between reactions to this fruit and hayfever

  19. So funny! As I was finishing my banana and starting to scratch my inner ear, I thought...does anyone else have this issue or is it in my head? Bananas AND pecans set my ears in motion. Glad to know I'm not crazy and it's a common occurrence. PHEW...Thank you!

  20. I've been noticing it lately, and finally googled itchy ears! I ate one this morning, and almost immediately my throat and ears were itchy. A few hours later, they're slightly itchy. I never know about this, and I'm glad there's a banana support group, hahahahaha! Cheers to good and less itchy health!
